Title: Multireference quantum chemistry on NISQ devices
Abstract: One of the foremost contenders for useful applications of NISQ devices is quantum chemistry calculations, i.e., solutions of the molecular Schrödinger equation (SE) for a many-electron system. I will outline what quantum chemistry is, and the traditional approach to the numerical solution of the SE on the quantum computer: the unitary coupled-cluster (UCC) method. I will then outline the multireference problem — perhaps the greatest challenge for traditional quantum chemistry methods. I will outline an idea for its resolution on a quantum computer via a novel MR-UCC formalism.
